She had no idea how long she had been running or in what direction, all she knew was that she heard the guards screaming behind her and their heavy footfalls on the cobbled streets of Port Royal. Samantha's breathing was heavy, her heart raced and a sting of pain kept torturing her side. How long would she be able to keep a distance between herself and the guards that without a doubt would feel the need to avenge their brother in arms? What if they brought in horses? There was no way that she could outrun those... She had to hide!
Rounding another corner Sam stopped and looked around, a panicked look flashing in her chocolate brown eyes. Even though the night was pitch black and the moon and stars were nowhere to be seen, Sam knew that the grey mass in front of her had to be a wall. Great, just what she needed. A friggin' dead end!
Not to far in the distance, she hears dogs barking and howling and the woman winced. Oh god... They brought out the dogs! What now? Samantha's grip tightened around the bloody dagger in her hand as she closed her eyes for a moment. She needed to clear her head, find a way to get out of here. There was no way that she was going back there, hell no! What for? So they could hang her another day? No... She would fight if she had to, even if she knew that she didn't stand a chance.
.......
When the guards on duty had brought out a bottle of Rum and a deck of cards, Samantha knew that she wouldn't get a lot of sleep. It was one of those nights again, the guards would play their game and drink their rum until they were completely shit faced. And the more they drank, the louder they would become, especially if one of them lost a big pot. A sigh escaped Samantha's lips as she pulled her blanket over her head and closed her eyes. Like it wasn't bad enough that she was waiting to be hung, couldn't they just let her have her peace?
Somehow she must have dozed off to sleep, because she was awoken again by the sound of her cell door being unlocked. Her eyes flashed open and she saw one of the guards, the fat one with the goatee, open up her cell with a wicked smile playing on his chubby features. Sam instantly knew what was going on and her eyes flashed to the table where the guards had been playing and drinking. Much to her relief, the other guard was snoring loudly and vast asleep.
Samantha jumped to her feet and backed away to the corner of her cell. The guard just laughed and stumbled forward, barely able to walk any more. Even in the corner of her cell, she could smell the alcohol fuming out of his toothless mouth. She knew what he was planning, he was drunk and wanted some feminine company. Sam was a girl and locked up a few steps away from him, what more could he wish for? Good plan, wrong girl...
Waiting a few more seconds, Samantha's muscles tightened and her eyes fixed on the guard's every move. Just one more step... Without warning, Sam threw herself at the guard with a feral scream. The force of their collision knocked the guard of his feet and the duo rolled across the floor of Sam's cell. Her quick hands quickly found the dagger that she's seen dangling from the man's belt and she drew the blade. Ignoring the man's screams, she plunged it down and down again until the guard stopped moving.
A shiver ran down the woman's spine as she stood there, the bloody dagger in her hand and the guard's lifeless body at her feet. The door was still open with the keys in the keyhole. This was her chance... She had to run! For a moment, the thought of locking up the drunken guard ran through her head but she decided against it. It was already a miracle that his friend's screams hadn't woke him up and moving him now would be stupid. Instead of that, she sneaked past him and started running. Running towards her freedom.
.....
Opening up her eyes again, Samantha quickly looked around for a place to hide but couldn't find a spot. What good would it do her anyway? The dogs would pick up her trail within seconds. What if she could get to the roof? Maybe if she climbed up those crates? With a little luck she could make the jump to the thatched roof across the street. Just when she walked over to the crates, she heard a sound behind her and quickly spun around. "Who's there!" The woman whispered, the dagger firmly in her grip as her eyes tried to pierce the darkness.
