Welcome to the Caribbean, love So you're officially a pirate, or Navy man, now that you look and think the part, you need to talk the talk... Sort of. I don't expect y'all to start using ye's and avast's and hearties, and scalleywags. Did they ever say that in the movies? Anyways, but there are some nautical terms that could be useful to know. And I'll post a bunch of them here, and if you have any to add, you can reply to this thread! Who knows, maybe eventually we'll have our own dictionary.

Crew Terms Able Seaman: A senior deckhand responsible for rigging, manning guns, and occasionally taking the helm.
Boatswain: Person responsible for supervising the crew and the ship's maintenance. Usually he's in charge of lashing the crew to work harder, and serves as an executioner... [eep]. Also spelled as: Bosun, or Bos'n.
Boatswain's Mate: Like an assistant to the Boatswain.
Cabin Boy: One who waits on and serves the captain and officers if you're on a Royal Navy ship.
Call Boy: One who carries the pipes and whistles of the boatswain, and relays whistled commands to other parts of the ship.
Carpenter: Person responsible for keeping the woodwork on board in tip top shape.
Cockswain: Head of the boat's crew.
Conder: The lookout who gives directions to the helmsman; Or directs the ship from a lookout position.
Deck Hand: In the Navy, a rank below Chief officer and boatswain.
Deck Officer: An officer who keeps watch over the bridge.
First Mate: Chief officer ranking just below master on a Navy ship.
Foretopman: A seaman whose station is the fore topmast.
Helmsman: The seaman who steers the vessel.
Lady of the Gunroom: Royal Navy slang for the seaman responsible for the gunner's stores.
Lamp Trimmer: Person responsible for maintaining the oil lamps on the vessel.
Lee Helmsman: The assistant to the Helmsman.
Master: Also known as the captain of the ship.
Master at Arms: One in charge for keeping law and order on the ship.
Mate: Same as the first mate; Responsible for organization and navigation.
Midshipman: Lowest ranking, commissioned officer.
Navigator: Person in charge of maps and keeping the ship going in the right direction.
Ordinary Seaman: Seaman who is not yet qualified for able seaman status.
Petty Officer: A non-commissioned naval officer.
Quatermaster: In the Royal Navy, assistant to the Helmsman.
Sailmaker: A crew member who constructs and repairs sails, along with other canvased materials.
Steward: Crew member in charge of catering, provisions and maintaining the living quarters.
Storekeeper: Crew member in charge of the stores.
Supercargo: Short for: Superintendent of Cargo; the owner or representative of the owner of a ship's cargo who travels on the boat.
Warrant Officer: In the Royal Navy, a senior raking, non-commissioned officer.
Yeoman: In the Royal Navy, an assistant to the navigator, and the storekeeper.
